Lots of Catching Up to Do

with 2 comments

First order of business… I was saddened today to learn of the death of Bea Arthur, one of my favorite “Golden Girls.” I actually had the DVD playing when I read the news online. It’s good to know I’ll always be able to enjoy the shows, even though now two of the girls are gone.

Last night, I played a long, hard three-set match of tennis and lost. Bummer. The worst part, however, was not the loss, but I injured an already weakened toenail, and now, I think I’m going to lose it. I’ve had some sort of “thing” going on with my right foot big toenail for about a year…areas where the nail seems to die…black spots underneath, etc. Last night, the running and hard stops crunched my toenail against the leather of my tennis shoe too many times. This morning, I woke up with a black toenail, and in trying to clip the nail, apparently allowed the blood and watery gunk to come out. Actually, as gross as it sounds, it allowed the painful pressure to subside a bit, and for the nail to settle back down on the nailbed. It’s still very painful and hard to wear shoes, but I know it will be worse if the nail falls off. We’ll see if I can play tennis again tomorrow, but right now, it seems doubtful.

Now, all the way back to Easter weekend. Sandee (Kimmy’s real name) and I went to Tallassee to meet my parents. They got along great! It went better than I even thought, with her feeling comfortable, and my parents being charmed by her personality and tales about her family.

Then, Sandee and I went to her lakehouse, and I met her parents and a couple of other relatives. Additionally, we were there to help her move most of her belongings out of the house, since she’s trying to sell it.

I enjoyed meeting her family, and things seemed to go well. I think they like me well enough, but since she’s not out to her family, I’m not sure if they knew the full import of the situation. That’s okay for now, as long as they like me and can sense what Sandee means to me.

However, the weekend was marred on Friday night by a wave of really bad storms that passed through the area. We chose to try to avoid one storm that, according to radar, was headed right toward the lake. In trying to get away from it, we either went into it or went into a different one. It’s a long story, but it culminated with our truck almost being knocked off the road by wind and rain and me yelling “Oh, shit!” right in her family’s presence. I was sooo embarassed, but honestly, at the time, it felt like the only thing that I wanted to say. (Actually, I think I just said what everyone else was thinking.)

We also spent part of that night in a convenience store while the storm passed. There were about 15 people in there at one point. The weather siren was sounding, the electricity went off, wind and rain was blowing parallel to the ground, and we all were gathered in the convenience store kitchen. It was pretty frightening for a few minutes.

As you can guess now, we all made it through, and at least, I’m pretty sure, her folks won’t forget me. 🙂

  1. it seems like Bea Arthur and the feisty shorter lady were consistently most people’s favorite Golden Girls

  2. I made the mistake of reading about your toenail while I was eating. You should rate this blog or at least give a warning when it’s about to get gross! 🙂
