All I Can Say is “Wow!”

with one comment

Kimmy called me a “dork” the other day (in a loving way, of course), and I quickly corrected her to let her know that I’m actually a “geek.” It’s times like this, when I get so pumped about software, and my geekiness is at its zenith, that I feel like I’m channeling a 13-year-old boy.

Anyway, at work, I often have to work with PowerPoint (ptooey!), and it frustrates me to no end that (at least in the Microsoft 2007 version) you can’t “link” images that you place into the slides. You just insert them. They aren’t named, they aren’t linked, there’s no way to track them. And if you had the misfortune of working on a LARGE PowerPoint project with multiple presentations linked in multiple places and had several people with different levels of organizational skills working on them…moving files, deleting files, modifying files… well, you can imagine the chaos and frustration that might ensue. Things to Talk About

with 2 comments

Anyone who knows me already knows that I’m rarely at a loss for things to talk about. I love to ask people questions about themselves, what they think about things, etc., and I love to talk about those things to others. I do enjoy silence sometimes, but I have to admit, I prefer good conversation to the quiet. Of course, “good” is often relative. 🙂

Anyway, Kimmy and I have done quite a bit of talking, asking and answering each other’s questions, exploring our pasts, and talking about our futures. One of Kimmy’s ways of spurring conversation is to ask me, at random moments, “What are you thinking?” Sometimes, it’s as simple and mindless an answer as “I wonder if I locked the door” to something like “I was thinking of where we might be in five years,” which would likely propel us into a deeper conversation.

A couple of my favorite ways to get interesting factoids from someone’s life are these: The first one is a “game” I made up called “First, Worst, Best, Last.” You take a subject like “date” and ask what was their first date, worst date, best date… well, you get the picture.

The other way of precipitating conversation is to just look around the room or probe the deep recesses of my brain and pull out any noun and speak it. Then, for Kimmy, it becomes kind of a word association game. She just pulls anything from her past that has to do with what I said, and runs with it. Read the rest of this entry »

When Good Animals Go Bad

with 2 comments

I’m sure by now, you’ve all hear the story about the chimp who went nutsy and attacked its owners friend, basically ripping her face off and leaving her in serious condition.

I’m not so much planning to write about what happened as to write about the media handling of the story after the fact. It seems that the desire to make stories more and more salacious is what drives most reporters these days.

I know there are plenty of things, people, events, situations which are plenty “weird” enough in and of themselves, and yes, the details often intrigue me as much as the headline of a National Enquirer while I’m standing at the counter, waiting for checkout. It’s the same thing that makes us glance over at car wrecks… most of us are drawn toward the bizarre, the off-kilter. And the media knows this and exploit it at every turn. New Look… Again

with 6 comments

Another change to the look of my site because I couldn’t get some features I wanted to show on the old one. I like the simplicity of this one better, and I also like that the “comment” link is on the top.

While I’m here, let’s have some fun. Give me your best caption for this photo. Here are a couple of mine:

Singapore Zoo“What do you mean they’re out of Preparation H?!?!”  (Cheryl)

“Mom told me that sliding board was hot, but did I listen? Noooooo.” (Cheryl)

“Pilates, yoga, running, no carbs and I still can’t lose this ass!!!” (Jane)

“Why does everyone always call me a “big a$$hole?” (Carmen)

“I like big butts, and I cannot lie…. Baby’s got back” (Cheryl)

“Well, doctor. I ate a bag of Double Bubble bubblegum, and a lot of chili beans. And, I suppose you can guess the rest.” (Cheryl)

“Ok, who wants a kiss?” (Wenzday)

“Does this fur make my butt look big?” (Becky)

Welcome a New Blog Family Member

leave a comment »

It’s inevitable, I suppose. Someone hangs out with my friends long enough, they feel compelled to blog… and thus, become a de facto member of the Blog Family.

In this post, we welcome my Kimmy (aka Wally in her blog). The title of her site is “Wall Street Brain” because she has Adult ADD, and her first post (and probably subsequent posts) discusses that condition and its impact on her life… likening her thoughts to the Wall Street ticker–always moving, always changing. Only she can tell you how it feels to be inside her head, and I’m sure it is frustrating to her at times, and at some point, it might be frustrating to me, but not yet.

Some of the characteristics of Adult ADD people are that they are highly intelligent, creative, and interesting. Kimmy/Wally has that in spades. And even though we’ve only known each other a relatively short time, it’s obvious to me that her focus is her family and her friends, despite how she thinks she might be falling short in communicating that.

So I’m happy to announce her new blog: “Wall Street Brain.” Please feel free to place it on your own page so that you’ll remember to visit it.

Fabulous Weekend

with 2 comments

You know how some things/events are so built up in one’s anticipation that it rarely exceeds (or even meets) one’s expectations? Like Christmases with the family SHOULD be Rockwellian, but ends up being more Dickensonian? And when that happens, the feeling of disappointment is what is left.

Well, fortunately, that did not happen for me this weekend!! First of all, I’m consciously making an effort to let go of trying to control things so much—starting first with those things that I can’t control in the first place…the actions of friends, the economy, my employer’s decisions—and also with those things I have a little bit of control over, but which exhaust (and sometimes, disappoints) me in the process.

So in spirit of the the laissez-faire attitude which I’m cultivating, it is becoming easier to appreciate what IS happening, rather than on what SHOULD (not) have happened or what MIGHT have happened. I wonder how I let myself get to a place of being so guarded and needing to be in control of my circumstances. I’m pretty sure a lot of it has to do with my dad, but it is what it is, and I know I can correct the course now, so I’m not going to worry about the origins or placing blame.
