Random Thoughts on a Monday

Marcel Marceau:
I saw where Marcel Marceau, the famous mime, died over the weekend. It dawned on me that, in his case, it might be more appropriate to have “a moment of noise” in memory of him. 🙂

Horrible Death:
In Redwood City, CA, a young man who was working at a place that manufactured circuit boards was overcome by fumes and fell into a vat of sulfuric acid. In the news story, it stated that he “drowned.” I’m thinking that having his flesh eaten off down to the bone and beyond might have had a part in it as well. Yeesh! What a horrendous way to go!

Weird Weekend Moment:
During the game on Saturday night, my cat Milo got up on the coffee table and laid down. My coffee table has glass panels on it, and it reminded me of a photo I’d seen on CuteOverload.com where someone had take a photo of their cat from underneath. So we got down on our hands and knees and looked at the underside of my bewildered cat, and laughed like crazy. I commented, “Fun on a Saturday night.” And it really was! 🙂

As Dianne and I said, it’s moments of silliness like that and like the ones we had at the fair, that not only stick in our memory as good times, but perhaps they are also the strands that knit us together as we create our collective friendships.

Employment:
Today begins my third week of no job. I’m not panicky yet, but I wish there were more job listings out there. This is the longest I’ve gone without working since I began working at 22… a looooong time ago. I’ve never had more than 10 days off at one time, so this feels very weird and unsettling to me.

Free Speech:
What do you think? Should Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have been given an opportunity to speak at Columbia University? I have my own thoughts about it, but will wait until y’all say what you want.

  1. “The strands that knit us together as we create our collective friendships.”

    That makes me smile. 🙂

  2. Marcel: So sad, but a cute way to honor him. 🙂

Horrible death: Ack! That is such a horrible way to die! That poor soul. I hope he passed quickly without feeling all of that.

Weekend moment: I love that “hover cat” photo! Where’s your photo?

Employment: Sorry that the waiting game is taking a while, but I’m sure there’s a good place right around the corner!

Free speech: You asked, so here comes my very opinionated view of this issue. I am so annoyed at why he was allowed to speak his personal thoughts on stage in our country but was not allowed to visit where the Twin Towers were. IMO, our gov’t wanted Ahmadinejad to sound like a crazy fool (which comes naturally to a disgusting dictator-type like him) just to make us hate him and his country more and therefore love our country and our gov’t more. It’s just more ridiculous fear-mongering. In the famous words of Dianne, “Grrrrrrr.”

  3. I didn’t make that clear on purpose because I wasn’t entirely sure about whether he should have been allowed in the USA. I just wanted to point out the denial of one event and the perfectly fine participation of another event.

But the more and more I think about it and type this all out, it doesn’t make any sense to me that Ahmadinejad be allowed to come here at all (because of the fear and hate mongering that the spectacle has caused). Hasn’t Bush named Iran (and Ahmadinejad himself since he is the leader) an enemy of our country because they support terrorism? That’s why it’s interesting that Bush thinks it’s honkeydorey that he was speaking here.

Sorry that my opinion wasn’t clearly thought out yet before. I’m sure this should help. I’ll look forward to reading your thoughts later.

  4. When I think of all of the great friendships I’ve had over the years, my mind is filled with all of those little moments like the “hover cat” adventure on Saturday night. Yep, those silly little things give us those unique shared memories of laughing, smiles, and fun. Seems I’ve had a lot of those kinds of moments lately with y’all – thanks!

So…what will Marceau’s tombstone say? “Here lies _____”

I hope the job thing breaks loose soon. I have been very blessed to have always been able to have a new job lined up before I left a previous job. I would be on the verge of insanity if I were in your shoes right now.

I doubt even know where to begin on the Iran thing. I admit I’m pretty ignorant in international politics, and this is no exception. Better to keep my mouth closed and think I’m an idiot, then to say something wrong and prove it so.
