What to Make of Dobson

with 2 comments

I was surprised to see in snippets of news (one of them here), that James Dobson, who was originally to be part of Ted Haggard’s restoration team, is now backing out of involvment.

I understand that pastors have to say “no” sometimes. They can not possibly be involved in every need that presents itself to them and still expect to be effective. I don’t know if that’s what’s happening here or not.

My cynical side that does not really care for the way James Dobson operates thinks there might be two other contributing factors to his withdrawal from the team: 1) He thinks that Haggard really is gay and would just feel uncomfortable being around him, and 2) He believes that if the “restoration” does not result in a heterosexual lifestyle, then it would appear that perhaps it’s not possible to change orientation.

It would be nice if Dobson would be as honest about his reasons as Haggard will be expected to be during his restoration.

  1. What reason do have to believe that Dobson isn’t acting in good faith, or telling the truth? I don’t see anything sinister in his decision and, given the nature of the situation, I can understand why he might not be a liberty, or why it might not be prudent, for him to give all his reasons for not being participating in counseling. It is too much a leap for me to just assume he is acting in bad faith at the service of a sinister agenda. Now, I am not Focus on the Family’s biggest supporter, but I’m willing to give Dr. Dobson the benefit of the doubt as well as grant him the sincerity of his beliefs.
